Photographer Puts America’s Poverty in Focus

In 2009, Steve Liss gave up shooting pictures of presidents and the covers of TIME magazines and embarked on something he felt would be a bit more meaningful. He created “In Our Own Backyard” and in an effort to raise awareness, dispel stereotypes, and encourage action to address poverty in the United States through the power of photojournalism.

The resulting photographs captured by Liss and his partners are powerful images that capture the reality of poverty in the United States. It is an unabashed look at “how the other half lives” founded in the hope that the images can help jump-start a national conversation about the issue of poverty.
