Bogaletch Gebre has fought for years to bring justice and equality to the girls of her native country, Ethiopia. For centuries, the practice of female genital mutilation has been a rite to womanhood in many of Ethiopia’s ethnic groups.

With her own personal experience as a motivating force, Bogaletch has made a lasting impact by empowering the women of Ethiopia through education and community-based movements. The result has been what some may have thought impossible: the abandonment of centuries-old gender-based violence.
